PEACE BEGINS WITH US: AVIARY CLUB OF NIGERIA MARKS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2026
The Aviary Club of Nigeria proudly joins people, organisations, communities, and leaders around the world in commemorating the International Day of Peace, observed annually on 21 September.
The theme for the International Day of Peace 2026 is “Invest in Peace - For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.” The United Nations describes peace as more than simply the absence of war, emphasizing safety, dignity, opportunity, cooperation, dialogue, and respect for human rights.
This year's theme is a timely reminder that peace is not created only through agreements between nations or decisions made in conference rooms. Peace begins within individuals, families, communities, organisations, and societies. Every person has a role to play in creating an environment where people can live together with mutual respect and understanding.
As the world marks this important day, many communities continue to experience the devastating consequences of violence, armed conflict, displacement, insecurity, and division. The United Nations has noted that conflicts are growing in scale and complexity, causing suffering across communities and borders.
Nigeria, too, continues to face security and humanitarian challenges in several parts of the country. Conflict and insecurity have affected lives and livelihoods, displaced communities, and contributed to food insecurity in affected areas. UN reporting in 2026 has highlighted continuing violence and displacement in northern Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad Basin, including serious humanitarian consequences in Borno State.
These realities remind us that peace should never be taken for granted. Where peace is absent, families suffer, businesses and livelihoods are disrupted, children lose opportunities, communities become divided, and development becomes more difficult.
The International Day of Peace provides an opportunity for every Avian to reflect on the kind of community we want to build within the Aviary Club of Nigeria and beyond.
As members of a fraternity built around brotherhood, friendship, unity, loyalty, respect, and service, let us make peace an everyday responsibility.
Let us learn to disagree without becoming enemies. Let us listen before judging. Let us resolve misunderstandings through dialogue rather than confrontation. Let us avoid words and actions that can unnecessarily create division, resentment, or hostility.
We should also be mindful of what we share on social media and in our various communication platforms. Words have the power to unite or divide. Every Avian can use his or her voice to encourage understanding, discourage violence, reject hate speech, and promote peaceful coexistence.
The Aviary Club of Nigeria encourages all Avians to become everyday advocates for peace, in our homes, workplaces, communities, chapters, regions, and wherever we find ourselves.
Peace advocacy does not always require a major public campaign. It can begin with a simple act of kindness, helping to settle a disagreement, reaching out to someone who feels excluded, respecting another person's opinion, or refusing to participate in activities that promote hatred and division.
The United Nations' 2026 observance similarly highlights the role of ordinary people, volunteers, advocates, civil society leaders, and community members as “everyday architects of peace.”
On this International Day of Peace, the Aviary Club of Nigeria calls on all members across all regions to let peace reign at all times.
Let us make our club a place where brotherhood is strengthened, differences are managed with maturity, and disagreements are resolved through respectful dialogue.
Let us carry the message of peace beyond the club and into our families, workplaces and communities.
Let us speak peace.
Let us promote peace.
Let us practice peace.
Let us protect peace.
Let us advocate peace.
Peace is everyone's responsibility, and every positive action matters.
As we commemorate this year's International Day of Peace, may our collective commitment to peace contribute to a safer, more united, compassionate, and harmonious society.
